Are you ready to turn your passion for being on the water into a real commercial boating career? Earning your Coxswain Certificate (frequently referred to as a Coxswain Ticket) is the ideal starting point for anyone looking to work across the Gold Coast waterways and coastal marine industries
iiCAPTAIN provide practical, hands-on training for students looking to complete a Coxswain Course on the Gold Coast. Our training covers all essential skills, including vessel handling, seaworthiness, emergency protocols, and marine safety regulations.
After earning your Coxswain Licence, you’ll be qualified to operate commercial boats up to 12m. This opens doors to employment across the Gold Coast Broadwater, including charter fishing operations, tourist vessels, dive boats, and commercial workboats.

You’ll also need to obtain a Provide First Aid qualification through an external training provider and satisfy all relevant AMSA criteria—such as documenting logged sea time, passing medical checks, and submitting your formal Certificate of Competency application.
There are THREE (3) levels of Coxswain
The Coxswain Grade 3 is composed of the following units:
– MARN008 – Apply seamanship skills aboard a vessel up to 12 metres
– MARK007 – Handle a vessel up to 12 metres
– MARI003 – Comply with regulations to ensure safe operation of a vessel up to 12 metres
The theory component of the coxswain course is done via correspondence through a boxed kit which we will send out.
Upon completion of the theory component of the coxswain ticket theory, you will be able to do the practical and exam component of the course with one of our skilled instructors.
Should you wish, the three units completed in this course can be used towards both the Coxswain 2 and Coxswain 1 courses.
Requirements: You will need internet access, your own copy (digital or hard copy) of the Australian Boaters Manual, plus a Commercial vessel for the final practical.
The Coxswain Grade 2 is composed of the following units:
– All units that make up Coxswain Grade 3 (Can be completed prior)
– MARC037 – Operate inboard and outboard motors
– MARF060 – Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
– MARF028 – Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
– MARF029 – Meet work health and safety requirements
– MARJ006 – Follow environmental work practices

Note there is also now a requirement to complete this Coxswain Ticket to be able to prove you can swin 50m with lifejackets.

The Coxswain Grade 1 is composed of the following units:
– All units that make up Coxswain Grade 2 and 3 (Can be completed prior)
– MARB027 – Perform basic servicing and maintenance of main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems
– MARC038 – Operate main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems
– MARH013 – Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 12 metres
– MARF030 – Survive at sea using survival craft
To complete Coxswain Grade 1 you will be required to have attained HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and completed all the units that make up Coxswain Grade 3 and 2. Note there is also now a requirement to complete this Coxswain Ticket to be able to prove you can swin 50m with lifejackets.
